Michael Semmens was awarded Polocrosse Victoria's highest individual honour for his dominating performance in Sale's A Grade team at the 2009 Victorian Polocrosse Championships held at Portland last weekend. Semmens won the 'Pip Wilson Memorial trophy' for the Best & Fairest A Grade player at the Championships, the highly respected and sought after trophy was struck in memory of the former Moe and Trafalgar player Keith 'Pip' Wilson who died tragically while playing Polocrosse at Sale ironically the same day Michael was born in 1973. Semmens also won the Brian Coridas Memorial trophy for the best No.3 in A Grade while his mount 'Roseridge Mary-Lou' took out the best horse in A Grade plus the Champion Horse of the Tournament, the 'The Liza Perpetual trophy'. Michael and Mary-Lou formed an unbeatable combination at the back of the lineout providing Sale with first use of the ball from the throw-ins and plenty of rebound from defence. Michael teamed up with brother Mark Semmens (No. 1) and Captain Steve Boulton (No. 2) in Sale's second section which won every chukka for weekend but unfortunately it wasn't enough to claim the championship with the team falling for the second year in a row in the final against Rosedale. Sale's effort to make it to the final was extraordinary with a long list of injuries to regular players forcing the club on a last minute recruitment drive which turned out No.2 Chris Jolly from a 2 year retirement and the return of No. 3 Kris 'Tassie' Lynus from Queensland who combined in the first section with No. 1 Phil Jolly. Sale won both its round games against Corio and Casterton and semi-final against Ballarat before going down to Rosedale in the final on Sunday afternoon.
Sale's B Grade team also made the final but lost to Trafalgar by 2 goals, playing for Sale were Noel Morris, Vicki Semmens, Matt Jarmain, Corey Buys, Noel Semmens and Judy-Anne Wilms who won best Horse in B Grade with her mount 'Roseridge Midori' while 'Roseridge Box Office' won the best Horse in C Grade for Marilyn Semmens. Sale won 2 other awards Best No. 3 in C Grade Jenny Tilburg and Best No. 2 in D Grade Sacha Wood.
